The theme of the Saint-Marcvaas refers to Saint Mark's Square in Venice where many pigeons gather every day. The pigeon usually stands for peace. Within animist symbolism they stand for 'heavenly beings' and always as a female entity in terms of goddesses. The horizontal palm motifs are a hint to the decor on the stone ornamental bands in the pavement of the square (now replaced by smooth stone ornamental bands).
